Haryana

Haryana has a proud history going back to the Vedic age. The state was the home of the legendary Bharata dynasty. Haryana is immortalized in the great epic Mahabharata. Kurukshetra, the scene of the epic battle between the Kaurvas and the Pandavas, is situated in Haryana. The state continued to play a leading role in the history of India till the advent of Muslims and the rise of Delhi as the imperial capital of India. Thereafter, Haryana functioned as an adjunct to Delhi and practically remained anonymous till the first war of India's Independence in 1857, when the people of Haryana joined the leaders of Indian revolt against the British Government.

The "Bahudhanyaka", history of Haryana which is 5000 years old and is full of Vedic legends is soaked up with glory. The Gita was preached by Lord Krishna in Kurukshetra, the holy land, situated in Haryana. Mahabharat was written by Ved Vyas on the Saraswati River's banks in Haryana.

Haryana, better known as the Green Land of India, can be divided into two natural areas: the sub-Himalayan Terai and the Indo-Gangetic plain. The plain is fertile and has slopes from the north to the south with a height above the sea level, averaging between 700 and 900 ft. The South-west of Haryana is dry, sandy and barren. For most of the year, the climate of Haryana is of a pronounced character -very hot in summer and markedly cold in winter. The Haryanvi People have martial arts laid over an ancient heritage full of spiritual values. This state has a rich variety of folk dances, craft, festivals and fairs. On 1st November in the year of 1966, Haryana became India's new state with its capital being Chandigarh. Haryana is really famous for milk products and basmati rice.

Chandigarh, the capital of both Haryana and Punjab, is despite the fact that it is quite strictly planned, a nice stop when you’re on your way to Amritsar or Leh. The city is known for the architectural mark the great French architect Le Corbusier left all throughout Chandigarh. The city, a model of wide roads and spacious residential colonies, is an excellent base for specialized sightseeing. The white domed temple of Goddess Chandi Devi that stands on the slope of a hill, situated in the north-east of Chandigarh, on the edge of the Shivalik hills, is from where the city obtains its name Chandigarh. From here one can travel northwards to the hill resorts of Shimla, Kullu, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie. Chandigarh is not only the most modern city in the country but has been planned to perfection by the world famous French architect le Cobusier.

The state is bounded by Uttar Pradesh in the east, Punjab in the west, Himachal Pradesh in the north and Rajasthan in the south. The Union Territory of Delhi is landlocked on three sides by Haryana.
